Swedish Elkhound Breed Club

Accepted Colors Of The Swedish Elkhound

This dog typically comes in light to dark grey color with characteristic light or cream markings on the sides of the muzzle, cheeks, throat, chest, belly, legs and under the tail. Also known as 'wolf' markings.

In a Elkhound, the colors are never solid, almost always a shade of agouti but with no striking markings. Seen on the husky for instance; masks, spectacles, and other facial markings. They tend to have a wolf-like appearance because out of most dog breeds, they are most closely related from the wolf, having a direct bloodline right to it's wild relative.

With markings; they can only have a partial mask that starts at the muzzle, only coloring the lower jaw down to the neck and spreading up the cheek bone. They can have a 'tie' which can occur, but it is considered a serious fault within the breed's standard. They also have a characteristic black tail tip some dogs have more or less but those without it ware rare. On the neck is usually a lighter shade of grey agouti.
