Swedish Elkhound Breed Club

Breed History

The origin of the Swedish Elkhound can be traced back to 17th century Sweden. Enthusiasts believe these dogs to have ancient roots and to trace back as far as the 11th century, though this has never been proven scientifically or otherwise.

Throughout its history, the Swedish Elkhound has been most commonly used for hunting and tracking large game such as bear, deer, and moose, proving its superior abilities to perform in the harshest of climates and terrain while providing enthusiastic companionship.

Today, while the Swedish Elkhound has attained a regional popularity as a hunting dog, the breed remains rather rare outside of its native Sweden.
